Why I Coach

Real estate is what I do. Serving people is who I am.

That might sound like a slogan, but it is the truth I try to live every day. I have been a U.S. Army veteran for more than 20 years, a REALTOR for 22 years, and a father to twin daughters. One of my daughters has autism. I know what it means to need a community that sees you, supports you, and celebrates you for who you are. That is what Special Olympics does.

I became a Special Olympics coach because I believe in inclusion. I believe every person deserves the chance to train, compete, and feel the rush of throwing a perfect strike or crossing a finish line with a cheering crowd. The athletes do not just participate. They show up with full hearts, giving everything they have, and they teach me more about grit, joy, and perseverance than I could ever teach them.

Coaching Special Olympics embodies the Service Before Self philosophy that guides my life. It is not about me. It is about showing up for people who deserve every opportunity to shine. The athletes put in the work. They train hard. They cheer for each other. And when they compete, the score is almost beside the point. The real victory is in the effort, the courage, and the community.

Today's Event: Special Olympics Bowling Tournament in Santa Clarita

Today's bowling tournament brings more than 80 athletes from several areas across the region, including Antelope Valley, Tehachapi, and Santa Clarita, to compete in one of the most popular Special Olympics sports. Bowling is a sport that welcomes everyone. It does not require speed, endurance, or height. It rewards focus, technique, and heart. And when an athlete rolls that ball down the lane and watches the pins fall, the look on their face is pure magic.

The energy in the building today is incredible. Cheering, high-fives, teammates celebrating each other's strikes, coaches clapping and shouting encouragement. There are no small moments here. Every frame is a chance to celebrate. Every spare and every strike brings a roar from the crowd. And every gutter ball is met with a pat on the back and a "you got the next one."

Athletes compete in singles, doubles, and team events. Some are seasoned bowlers with years of practice. Others are competing for the first time. It does not matter. Everyone belongs. Everyone is celebrated. That is the Special Olympics difference.

What Special Olympics Means

Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports. But it is so much more than sports.

It is about inclusion. It is about confidence. It is about community. The athletes train hard and compete with incredible heart. They form friendships that last a lifetime. They learn skills that carry into every part of their lives. And they prove, every single day, that ability is not defined by what someone cannot do but by what they choose to do with everything they have.

Every athlete is a champion regardless of the score. That is not a platitude. It is a fact. The courage it takes to step onto the lane, to compete in front of a crowd, to try your best when the outcome is uncertain. That is real. That is worthy of celebration.

My Commitment

I have been involved with Special Olympics for years. I coach. I volunteer. I show up to events and cheer louder than just about anyone. I advocate for inclusion in our schools, our workplaces, and our communities. This is not a marketing play. It is not a photo opportunity. It is a life mission.

As the father of a daughter with autism, I understand the power of a community that says, "You belong here." I see it in the stands at every Special Olympics event. I see it in the coaches who give their time selflessly. I see it in the volunteers who hand out water bottles and high-fives. And I see it in the athletes, who are the real heroes of every competition.

Service Before Self is not just a phrase I use in real estate. It is the principle that guides everything I do. Coaching Special Olympics is one of the most authentic expressions of that principle.
